Selling Gold Without a Hallmark — Will You Get a Lower Rate?

"My gold has no hallmark — will anyone give me the full rate?" It is one of the most common worries among sellers of older jewellery, and it is often used against them. The reassuring truth: unmarked gold is sold every day, and with proper testing it should fetch exactly the same value as stamped gold. Here is why, and how to make sure you are not talked down.

Why So Much Gold Has No Hallmark

Hallmarking became mandatory for new jewellery sold through registered jewellers only in recent years. Everything made or bought before that — which is the majority of gold sitting in Indian households — was never required to carry a BIS mark. Inherited bangles, wedding jewellery from decades ago, pieces from small local goldsmiths: most of it is unmarked, and that is completely normal.

How Unmarked Gold Is Valued

Here is the key point. The value of your gold comes from its actual purity and weight — both of which are measured, not read off a stamp. A buyer with XRF testing can determine the exact purity of an unmarked piece in seconds, non-destructively, with the reading shown on screen. Once purity is known, the payout is the same formula used for any gold: weight × purity factor × current rate.

In other words, the hallmark is a convenience that confirms purity in advance. Testing does the same job directly. A missing stamp changes nothing about what the metal is worth.

The Lowball Myth

Unfortunately, "no hallmark" is a favourite excuse for underpaying. Some buyers treat an unmarked piece as a reason to assume lower purity, quote a reduced rate, or add a vague "verification" deduction. None of this is legitimate when the gold has been properly tested.

If a buyer can test the purity — and any serious buyer can — then they know exactly what your gold is. Quoting less because it lacks a stamp is a pricing tactic, not a rule.

How to Protect Yourself

• Insist on XRF testing and ask to see the purity reading on screen.
• Confirm the tested purity is what goes into the calculation — not a lower "assumed" figure.
• Reject any "no hallmark" deduction. There is no such legitimate line item once purity is confirmed.
• Compare final in-hand offers from more than one buyer if you have any doubt.
• Do not accept a rushed verbal purity claim — a real test takes moments and is shown to you.

What About Very Old or Mixed Pieces?

Older jewellery is frequently high purity — often 22K or more — because traditional pieces were made with less alloying. Unmarked does not mean inferior; sometimes the opposite. If a piece contains stones or non-gold elements, only that genuine non-gold weight is set aside; the gold itself is valued at its full tested purity.

Do not let a missing hallmark make you feel your gold is worth less or that you are in a weak position. It is the ordinary state of most household gold. Demand a proper test, check that the tested purity drives the price, and refuse any reduction based on the absence of a stamp.
